How Much Does an SEO Audit Cost?

SEO audit cost explained: what each price level includes, what free audits really are, what drives the price, and why implementation is a separate budget.

By Mehdi Hassan9 min read

The short answer

SEO audit cost ranges from free, for an automated crawl report, to a substantial project fee for a senior multi-week review of a large site. The price depends on site size, depth, who does the work and whether fixes are included. Most audits deliver findings only, so budget separately for the copy, design and development that implement them.

Key takeaways

  • SEO audit pricing spans free tool reports to senior multi-week reviews; scope explains most of the gap.
  • Free audits are usually lead magnets: an automated crawl with little or no human judgment.
  • Implementation is a separate cost and often larger than the audit itself.
  • Compare quotes by deliverable and named priority pages, not by page count or price alone.
  • We don't sell a standalone SEO audit; we review findings on a free call and ship the fixes.

Part of SEO Audit: What It Is, What It Should Include and What It Costs

How much does an SEO audit cost?

An SEO audit can cost anything from nothing, for an automated report, to a significant project fee for a senior review of a large, complex site. The spread is wide because "SEO audit" covers very different amounts of work, from a ten-minute crawl export to weeks of analysis.

We'll be straight about the numbers. We haven't found SEO audit price data we trust enough to quote as a market range, and many of the figures that rank are published by agencies pricing their own services. Rather than invent a range, this guide shows what each level of audit includes, what moves the price and how to compare quotes. For context, in the quotes our research collected for adjacent work, CRO audits run from about $1,000 to $50,000 and UX audits from about $1,500 to $25,000. SEO audit quotes vary widely too, for the same reason. For what the audit itself should cover, start with our guide to what an SEO audit is and what it should include.

What do you get at each SEO audit price level?

SEO audits fall into roughly five levels of scope, and each level buys a different kind of output. The table shows what's usually included and where it tends to sit on price, from free to the top of what providers quote.

Audit level

What's usually included

Relative price

Typical output

Free automated audit

A crawler or SEO tool run against your domain

Free

Health score and list of warnings

Tool report with light review

Crawl export plus a short summary from a junior reviewer

Low

PDF of issues, little prioritizing

Technical SEO audit

Crawling, indexing, rendering, redirects, speed, structured data

Low to middle

Ranked technical findings

Full SEO audit

Technical plus on-page content, structure, internal links and competitors

Middle to high

Prioritized plan with owners and effort

Audit plus implementation

Findings plus the copy, design and code changes made

Highest; often priced as a project or retainer

Fixed pages, live on the site

These are levels, not fixed prices, and providers price them differently by region, seniority and site size. The middle rows are where most startups should buy. The top row costs the most, but it's the only one that changes your site.

What drives SEO audit pricing?

SEO audit pricing is driven by five things: how big and complex the site is, how deep the analysis goes, who does it, what the deliverable looks like and whether anything gets fixed. Tool subscriptions are a small part; senior time is most of it.

  • Site size and complexity. A ten-page marketing site is a small job. Thousands of URLs, a blog, docs, localized versions or e-commerce filters multiply the crawl, the analysis and the edge cases.
  • Depth. A technical-only review costs less than one that also reads every priority page for intent, studies competitors and checks answer-engine readiness.
  • Seniority. Senior reviewers cost more per hour and usually find fewer but larger issues. Junior reviewers often deliver more pages of report and less judgment.
  • Data access. An audit that uses your Search Console and analytics takes longer than one based on a public crawl, and it's far more accurate.
  • Deliverable. A ranked list is quicker to produce than a long report with mockups, content briefs and redirect maps.
  • Urgency. A traffic drop after a launch often needs diagnosis within days, which some providers price higher.

If your audit is part of a redesign, scope matters even more. Our pre-redesign SEO audit lists what to capture, which helps you ask for exactly that.

What are free SEO audits really?

Free SEO audits are usually automated crawl reports offered as a lead magnet, and they're useful for spotting obvious technical errors but not for deciding what to fix first. The provider's goal is a sales conversation, which is fine as long as you know it.

A free audit can catch broken links, missing titles, redirect chains and slow pages. What it can't do is judge which of its warnings matter, read your pricing page as a buyer would, or use your Search Console data. Many free reports lead with a health score, which rewards fixing lots of small warnings and can miss the one problem blocking a priority page from Google.

Our comparison of free vs paid SEO audits goes through exactly what each catches and misses.

How is SEO implementation priced separately from the audit?

SEO implementation is usually priced separately from the audit, by the hour, by the project or as a monthly retainer, and it's often the larger cost. An audit tells you what to change; implementation pays for the people who change it.

Typical fixes span several skills. Rewriting titles, headings and thin pages is copywriting. Restructuring navigation or templates is design. Fixing rendering, redirects, structured data or Core Web Vitals is development. An SEO agency may make some of these changes and hand the rest to your team, which is where many audits stall.

Redesigns show the pattern clearly. Our research found that SEO redirect and content-migration work, an extra 10–20% on a redesign, is usually left out of agency quotes. Ask every provider which fixes they make themselves and which they leave to you. Our guide to turning SEO audit findings into fixes shows how to plan and budget that work.

Hypothetical example: budgeting audit and fixes together

For example, suppose a SaaS startup with a 40-page marketing site and a blog gets a full SEO audit. The top findings: pricing and integration pages render client-side, three feature pages compete for the same query, and blog posts have no links to product pages.

The audit is one cost. The fixes are another: moving the key templates to server rendering is development, merging the competing pages and rewriting them is copy, and adding internal links across the blog is editorial work. Planning that budget before buying the audit means the report gets acted on the month it arrives.

Is a technical SEO audit worth paying for?

A technical SEO audit is worth paying for when you have signs of a technical problem: pages missing from Google, a traffic drop after a launch, a JavaScript-heavy site or a planned migration. For a small, healthy site built on a mainstream platform, a checklist and Search Console often catch most technical issues.

The highest-value technical findings are usually rendering and indexing. A marketing site built as a client-side React app can show search engines and AI crawlers an almost empty page. Accidental noindex tags and wrong canonicals can quietly remove key pages. Those issues justify a paid review. Missing alt text on a few images doesn't. Our SEO audit checklist for startup and SaaS websites lets you check the basics first, so you only pay an expert for what you can't diagnose yourself.

How do you compare SEO audit quotes?

Compare SEO audit quotes by what you'll receive and how it will be prioritized, not by headline price or number of pages crawled. Two quotes at the same price can include completely different work.

  1. Ask for a sample report. Look at the format and whether findings are ranked by impact and effort. Our SEO audit report example shows what good looks like.
  2. Check which pages get a manual review. Your homepage, pricing and product pages should be named.
  3. Confirm data access. A provider that won't use Search Console is guessing.
  4. Ask who does the work. The person on the sales call and the person auditing are not always the same.
  5. Ask about answer engines. In 2026 an audit should check AI crawler access and server-rendered content.
  6. Clarify what happens next. Who makes the fixes, and how is that priced?

Frequently asked questions

Why do SEO audit prices vary so much?
Prices vary because the label covers very different work. A free audit is an automated crawl; a senior audit of a large site can involve weeks of analysis across analytics, Search Console, content, code and competitors. Site size, depth, seniority and whether fixes are included all change the price. Comparing deliverables, not headline prices, is the only fair way to judge quotes.
Is an SEO audit a one-time cost?
Usually, yes: most audits are priced as a one-off project. But sites change, so many teams repeat a full audit once a year and run lighter checks monthly. Implementation can be one-off or ongoing. If you publish often, change templates or run campaigns regularly, an ongoing retainer that includes monitoring can cost less than repeated full audits.
Should an SEO audit include keyword research?
A full audit should include enough keyword and intent analysis to judge whether priority pages target the right queries and whether pages compete with each other. A complete keyword strategy for new content is usually separate work. Ask the provider which one is included, because a technical audit often has no keyword analysis at all.
Can a web design agency do an SEO audit?
Some can, especially for technical and on-page issues, because many SEO problems live in templates, rendering and content structure. Ask whether the agency uses Search Console data and ranks findings, and whether it can implement the fixes. For off-site work such as link building or digital PR, a specialist SEO agency is usually a better choice.
What's the difference between an SEO audit and SEO reporting?
An SEO audit is a diagnosis of what's wrong and what to fix, done at a point in time. SEO reporting is ongoing measurement of traffic, rankings and conversions, usually monthly. An audit sets the plan; reporting shows whether the plan is working. Many retainers combine both, but they're different deliverables and should be priced as such.
