Zero-Click Search: How to Win Buyers Who Never Click

A zero click search strategy for 2026: get named inside AI answers, then convert the smaller, higher-intent click with a sharper landing page.

By Mehdi Hassan7 min read

The short answer

A zero click search strategy wins customers by getting your brand named inside the answer, then converting the fewer, higher-intent visitors who still click. You earn the mention with answer-first pages and off-site mentions, and you earn the conversion with a landing page that picks up exactly where the AI answer stopped.

Key takeaways

  • Success moves from sessions to two things: being named in the answer and converting the click that follows.
  • Ahrefs found the top result's CTR drops 58% when an AI Overview shows, so every remaining click is worth more.
  • Web mentions correlated far more with AI Overview visibility than backlinks in Ahrefs' 75,000-brand study.
  • Homepages and money pages, not general blog posts, carried most AI-attributed leads in TripleDart's B2B study.
  • Measure with a self-reported attribution field and a monthly prompt audit, not only with Search Console clicks.

Part of Answer Engine Optimization (AEO): The Complete Guide for SaaS and B2B Sites

What is a zero click search strategy?

A zero click search strategy is a plan for winning buyers when the search page or AI assistant answers the question before anyone visits your site. It has two goals: get your brand named in the answer, and make the click that does come convert at a much higher rate than old blog traffic did.

Most teams treat zero-click searches as a traffic problem and try to claw sessions back. That's the wrong frame. The buyer still learns something, still forms a shortlist and still visits a vendor eventually. The question is whether your name was in the answer and whether your page was ready when they arrived. This guide is part of our answer engine optimization guide, which covers the full AEO picture.

If you're new to the term, start with our plain-English definition of zero-click search. Here we focus on what to do about it.

How big are zero click searches in 2026?

Zero-click behavior is now the majority of Google searches in the US, and AI Overviews make the remaining organic clicks scarcer. Two numbers from the research frame the scale, and both come with caveats worth knowing.

of US Google searches ended with no click, Jan–Apr 2026 (SparkToro)
68%
lower CTR for the top result when an AI Overview shows (Ahrefs, Dec 2025 data)
58%
the same Ahrefs CTR drop measured a year earlier
34.5%

SparkToro switched panel data providers in 2026, so its figure isn't a clean year-on-year comparison. Ahrefs' numbers show the direction more clearly: the click penalty from an AI Overview grew from 34.5% to 58% in about a year. Whatever the exact rate on your keywords, plan for fewer informational clicks, not more. For the wider debate, read what zero-click search means for SEO.

What does winning look like when nobody clicks?

Winning in zero-click search means being cited or named in the answer for the questions your buyers ask, and converting a higher share of the visitors who arrive. Sessions alone stop being a useful scoreboard because they shrink even when your influence grows.

Old metric

Why it misleads now

Zero-click metric to add

Organic sessions

Falls when answers satisfy the query, even if you were cited

Share of buyer prompts where you're named

Keyword rankings

Many AI citations come from outside the top 10

The second column matters most. A team that only watches sessions will cut the content that's quietly getting them named, then wonder why branded demand dropped a quarter later.

How do you get named in zero-click answers?

You get named by publishing pages that answer buyer questions directly and by being mentioned on sites the engines already trust. Google's own guidance says AI features reward the same fundamentals as normal SEO, so this isn't a separate technical project.

  1. List the questions buyers ask before they shortlist

Pull them from sales calls, support tickets and competitor comparison searches. Twenty to thirty real prompts beat a keyword export.

  2. Answer each one in the first lines of a section

Put a standalone 40–60 word answer under a question-style heading. Reported analyses of ChatGPT citations found about 44% come from the first 30% of a page. See how to structure content so AI engines quote it.

  3. Add the facts engines can lift

Pricing, who it's for, who it's not for, integrations and security answers. Vague positioning copy gives an engine nothing to quote.

  4. Earn mentions off your own site

In Ahrefs' study of 75,000 brands, web mentions correlated 0.664 with AI Overview visibility, against 0.218 for backlinks. Reviews, podcasts, partner pages and data others cite all count.

  5. Keep the page fresh and server-rendered

Show a visible updated date and make sure the content is in the HTML, because many AI crawlers don't run JavaScript.

How do you optimize for zero click and still get the click?

You optimize for zero click by assuming the visitor already read a summary of you, and designing the landing page to answer the next question instead of the first one. The person who clicks through from an AI answer usually wants proof, pricing or a way to start.

That changes the page. A hero that re-explains the category wastes the visit. A hero that confirms the claim the engine made, shows a price or a starting point, and puts proof right underneath does the job. We cover the layout in detail in designing landing pages for visitors arriving from ChatGPT.

  • Match the answer's language. If engines describe you as a fixed-price studio, say fixed price above the fold.
  • Show the price or the range. Pricing questions are among the most common pre-shortlist prompts, and hiding the answer sends buyers back to the chatbot.
  • Put proof before features. Case studies, logos and specifics do more for a pre-informed visitor than a feature grid.
  • Offer a low-commitment next step. A short call or a trial beats a long contact form for someone who's still comparing.

Which pages should carry a zero click marketing plan?

Your homepage and money pages should carry the plan, because that's where AI-referred buyers land and convert. Blog posts still help you get named, but they rarely close the deal on their own.

TripleDart's Q1 2026 study of 28 B2B SaaS companies makes the point sharply. Homepages earned 31.9% of LLM citations and 81.7% of AI-attributed leads, while general blog posts drew about 12,000 sessions and zero leads. Pricing comparisons and long-form deep dives were the only blog formats that converted at all.

For example, suppose you sell a scheduling tool to clinics

Hypothetical example: a buyer asks an assistant for scheduling tools that handle multi-location clinics. The answer names three vendors, including you, with one line each. The buyer clicks your name.

If they land on a homepage that says "Better scheduling for modern teams", they go back. If they land on a page that says "Scheduling for multi-location clinics", shows plans, lists the EHRs you integrate with and links a short clinic case study, they book a demo. Same citation, very different outcome. The work is on the page, not in the search result.

How do you measure a zero click search strategy?

Measure a zero click search strategy with three signals: how often you're named for buyer prompts, how much AI referral traffic arrives, and what buyers say brought them in. None is perfect alone, but together they show whether the plan is working.

  • Monthly prompt audit. Run your 20–30 buyer prompts in ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google, and log whether you're named and which page is cited.
  • AI channel group in GA4. Group referrals from chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, claude.ai, gemini and copilot. Our guide to tracking AI traffic in GA4 has the setup.
  • "How did you hear about us?" field. Free text on forms and a question on calls catch the research that analytics can't see.
  • Conversion rate on money pages. If citations rise and conversion on the pages they point to rises too, the strategy is doing its job.

Review these quarterly rather than weekly. AI answers vary from run to run, so a single check tells you little, while a trend over three months tells you a lot.

Frequently asked questions

Are zero-click searches bad for small B2B companies?
Not necessarily. Zero-click searches remove low-intent visits that rarely converted, but they also let a small company appear next to bigger names in an AI answer it would never have outranked. The risk is only real if your site can't convert the buyers who do click, or if nobody mentions you outside your own domain.
Should I stop writing blog posts because of zero-click search?
No, but change what you write. Informational posts that only define terms lose the most clicks. Posts with original data, honest comparisons, pricing breakdowns and deep how-tos still earn citations and occasional leads. Put most new effort into homepage, pricing, comparison and use-case pages, then support them with fewer, stronger posts.
Does zero-click search affect paid search too?
AI Overviews and AI Mode change the page layout for many queries, so paid placements can sit lower or compete with an answer for attention. The commercial queries that trigger ads tend to keep more clicks than informational ones. Watch your paid click-through rate by query type rather than assuming the effect is the same as organic.
How long does a zero click marketing plan take to show results?
Expect at least a quarter before trends are readable. Page changes can be picked up by search engines within weeks, but citation patterns are noisy, mentions take time to earn, and self-reported attribution needs a few months of form entries. Set a baseline prompt audit first so you have something to compare against.
Can schema markup help me win zero-click answers?
Schema helps search engines understand a page and qualify it for rich results, so keep Article, Organization, FAQ and Breadcrumb markup in place. But Ahrefs' controlled 2026 test found no citation lift from adding schema, and Google says AI features don't need special markup. Treat it as hygiene, not as the strategy.
