Product Designer Rates: Freelance, Fractional and Agency

Product designer hourly rate in 2026: freelance, fractional and agency rates by region, and what each level actually delivers in a working week.

By Mehdi Hassan6 min read

The short answer

A product designer hourly rate for freelancers typically runs about $80 to $180 in the US, £55 to £90 in the UK, $25 to $60 in Eastern Europe and $15 to $45 in South Asia. Fractional designers usually bill a monthly retainer instead, and agencies price by project or retainer. Seniority decides where in each band a designer sits.

Key takeaways

  • Freelance rate bands: about $80–$180/hr in the US, £55–£90 in the UK, $25–$60 Eastern Europe, $15–$45 South Asia.
  • Compare output per week, not hourly rate. A senior designer often ships a finished flow where a junior ships drafts.
  • Fractional designers trade hourly billing for a monthly retainer, commonly in the $2k–$12k band.
  • A full-time designer costs about $90k–$150k+ a year fully loaded and two to three months to hire.
  • Designify's $6,000 monthly retainer covers design and development with no hourly tracking.

What is a typical product designer hourly rate in 2026?

A typical product designer hourly rate depends mostly on region and seniority. Published rate benchmarks put freelance design rates at about $80 to $180 an hour in the US, £55 to £90 in the UK, $25 to $60 in Eastern Europe and $15 to $45 in South Asia. These are directional bands; individual rates vary widely inside them.

Region

Typical freelance band

Where seniority lands

United States

$80–$180/hr

Senior product designers toward the top

United Kingdom

£55–£90/hr

Senior and specialist toward the top

Eastern Europe

$25–$60/hr

Strong senior talent near the top

South Asia

$15–$45/hr

Wide spread in quality within the band

The rate is the least useful number in the decision. What matters is how much finished, buildable work arrives each week and how much of your time it takes to get there. For the full budget of a product, including research and screen counts, see our app design cost guide.

What does each level of product designer deliver per week?

Each level delivers a different kind of output, not just a different amount. A junior designer turns clear direction into screens. A senior designer turns a vague problem into a decided flow. A fractional lead or studio adds judgment about what not to build. The table describes what a typical week of focused work looks like at each level.

Level

What a week typically produces

What you still supply

Junior freelancer

Screens from a defined spec, variations on existing patterns

The flow, the copy, detailed feedback

Mid-level freelancer

A complete flow with main states, using your component library

Product decisions and priorities

Senior freelancer

A decided flow with edge cases, rationale and a prototype

Access to users and data

Fractional product designer

Prioritized roadmap input, flows, reviews of shipped UI

A developer to build it

Design and dev studio

Designed and coded UI, often shipped to production

Priorities and feedback

These are typical patterns, not guarantees. Ask for a recent example of one week's output at the level you are hiring, and judge that rather than the job title. When the work also has to be built, compare against one team for design and development.

How much does a fractional product designer cost?

A fractional product designer usually charges a monthly retainer rather than an hourly rate, and design and product retainers commonly sit in the $2,000 to $12,000 a month range. The retainer buys a set share of the designer's week, regular rituals such as reviews and planning, and continuity across releases.

Fractional work suits companies with steady product changes but not enough to justify a full-time hire. It fails when the retainer buys too few hours to finish anything, so ask how many days a week you get and what happens to unused time. Our fractional design team guide covers the model in more depth.

How to convert a retainer into an effective hourly rate

Divide the monthly retainer by the hours it actually buys. For example, suppose a fractional designer charges a monthly fee for two days a week: that is roughly 8 working days, or about 60 hours, in a month. Divide the fee by 60 to get the effective rate, then compare it with freelance quotes.

This is only the first comparison. A retainer often includes things hourly work doesn't, such as standing reviews, roadmap input and availability between sessions, so a slightly higher effective rate can still be the better buy.

What do product design agencies charge?

Product design agencies usually price by project or by monthly retainer, not by the hour. Project quotes for MVP design run from about $2,000 to $40,000 in the ranges we see, and full design systems from about $15,000 to $150,000. Some agencies set high project minimums or require 12-month retainer commitments, so ask about both before you start.

Designify brand & design sprint, design only
$3,000

Agency rates include things a freelancer doesn't: project management, more than one specialist, and cover when someone is away. For AI products, where the interface has to explain uncertain output, specialist knowledge matters more; see how to pick an AI product design agency and AI product UX.

What drives a product designer's rate up or down?

Five factors drive the rate: seniority, region, specialization, whether the designer also codes, and how much risk they take on. Region sets the band; the other four set the position inside it.

  • Seniority. Senior designers charge more because they need less direction and make fewer expensive mistakes.
  • Region. The bands above. Time zone overlap often matters as much as the rate.
  • Specialization. Fintech, healthcare and AI products carry compliance and trust work that generalists may miss.
  • Design plus code. A designer who ships front-end code saves a handoff, and usually prices that in. Compare with web designer hourly rates and Framer expert rates.
  • Pricing model. Fixed-price work carries the designer's risk of overrun, so it often works out higher per hour than time-and-materials.

Freelancer, fractional, agency or in-house: which should you hire?

Hire a freelancer for a defined batch of screens, a fractional designer for steady ongoing work, an agency or studio when you need design and build together, and an in-house designer once design is a daily, permanent need. A full-time designer costs about $90,000 to $150,000 or more a year fully loaded and typically takes two to three months to hire.

Our agency vs freelancer vs in-house guide walks through the decision by company stage, and in-house product team vs studio compares the cost of building a team. If you also need brand work, rates differ again; see logo design cost.

Frequently asked questions

Do UX designers and UI designers charge different hourly rates?
Sometimes. UX specialists who run research and testing can charge more because the work is harder to replace, while visual UI designers vary widely. Most product designers do both, and their rate tracks seniority and region more than the UX or UI label. Ask what a typical week includes rather than relying on the job title.
Should I pay a product designer hourly or per project?
Pay hourly when the scope is unclear and you want flexibility, and per project when the deliverables are well defined. Hourly work shifts the risk of overrun to you; fixed-price work shifts it to the designer, who usually prices that in. For ongoing work, a monthly retainer often beats both because it removes re-quoting.
How many hours does it take to design one app screen?
There's no reliable single number, because a simple settings screen and a data-heavy dashboard are very different jobs. A screen also isn't finished until its states are designed: empty, loading, error and mobile. Ask designers to estimate by flow, including states, rather than by screen, and the estimates will be far easier to compare.
Is it cheaper to hire an offshore product designer?
The hourly rate is lower, with South Asia bands around $15 to $45 an hour against $80 to $180 in the US. The total can still be higher if time zones slow feedback, if copy and product judgment need heavy direction, or if work needs rework during the build. Hire on a small paid trial first and judge the output.
What should a product designer's contract include?
It should name the deliverables, the rate or price, revision limits, payment terms, and ownership of the Figma files and any assets. It should also say who owns the design system and prototypes, and require the files to live in your workspace. A notice period for ending the engagement protects both sides.
